Chong Kah Yan: From Code to Career - Unveiling the Journey of a QA Trailblazer
We are delighted to introduce one of our remarkable graduates, Chong Kah Yan, who shares her insightful journey from enrolling in the Bachelor of Software Engineering (Honours) programme to landing a fulfilling career as a Quality Assurance Engineer at QR Retail Automation (Asia) Sdn. Bhd.
Kah Yan openly reveals that the decision to pursue Software Engineering wasn't an immediate one. She sought advice from family and friends after the uncertainties that often accompany the transition from pre-university studies. Her curiosity-driven nature and the desire to understand the "why" behind things led her towards the dynamic field of Information Technology. After careful consideration and researching various programmes, Software Engineering emerged as the clear choice, recognising her interest and promising ample future opportunities.
Our alma mater’s Bachelor of Software Engineering (Honours) degree is aimed at developing both technical and soft abilities. Kah Yan reflects on the programme's impact, noting seminars and tutorials that polished self-learning, communication, teamwork, and leadership skills. The school's proactive approach in organising pre-internship workshops played a crucial role in preparing her for the industry. The comprehensive understanding of software development processes, coupled with subjects like project management and software testing, provided Kah Yan with a holistic perspective on her career path.
The journey from student to professional isn't always a straightforward one. Kah Yan shares the internal debate between pursuing a career as a programmer or a tester. A pivotal moment came during the "Software Testing" course in her final semester, solidifying her interest in quality assurance. This led her to apply for a software tester internship, ultimately securing a Quality Assurance Engineer position. The experience showcases the importance of hands-on learning in helping students make informed decisions about their career paths.
Before officially embarking on her professional journey, Kah Yan demonstrated proactive initiative by obtaining the Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL) certificate during her last semester. This achievement not only reflects her commitment to excellence but also underscores the value of continuous learning in the ever-evolving field of software engineering.
Beyond the technical aspects of software engineering, Kah Yan acknowledges the invaluable personal skills gained from the programme. The ability to navigate failure with courage emerged as a standout attribute. Facing challenges in coding and research, she learned to cope with stress and confront issues head-on. These resilience-building experiences have undoubtedly contributed to her personal growth and professional success.
Kah Yan expresses gratitude for the friends and tutors met during University life, forming bonds that extend beyond graduation. Regular dinner meet-ups and conversations continue to be a testament to the lasting connections forged. She also found support in crafting, a creative outlet providing respite from the demands of academic life. Kah Yan's favourite quote, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!" encapsulates her philosophy. She encourages others to be brave in shaping their lives through diverse experiences, a sentiment echoed in her own remarkable journey.
As Kah Yan continues to thrive in the field of Software Engineering, she serves as an inspiration to current students, reminding them that success is not just about technical proficiency but also about resilience, adaptability, and a passion for continuous learning. We are immensely proud to have Kah Yan as part of our alumni community, representing the spirit of excellence and determination that characterises our university.
