62nd Annual CAGS Conference

The Canadian Association for Graduate Studies (CAGS) will host its 62nd Annual Conference at the in Toronto, Ontario, from 29 October to 1 November 2024. The title of this year’s conference is Graduate Education in an Age of Uncertainty: Challenges and Opportunities.

High quality, affordable, and accessible graduate education plays an essential role in better understanding and tackling the complex problems that confront all Canadians. Having a well-educated population is a particularly important goal for this country, which is largely based on the “ideas economy.” In this moment of rapid technological and social change, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and faculty researchers must be well-supported and equipped.

For more than six decades deans, associate/vice deans, administrators, faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students have met at our annual conference to learn and share ideas about the future of graduate education in Canada.

The conference will feature a variety of practical, results-driven panel discussions, roundtables, lightning presentations, and workshops, as well as daily plenary sessions dedicated to exploring the pressing challenges and unique opportunities that confront the graduate studies ecosystem in Canada. The conference will feature CAGS’ annual general meeting (AGM) and the 2024 National 3MT Showcase. A pre-conference workshop for deans, associate deans, and directors will be held in afternoon on Tuesday, 29 October (separate registration required), followed by the conference opening ceremony. The annual CAGS Awards Banquet will be held in the evening on Wednesday, 30 October. Opportunities for networking and reconnecting with colleagues will be a feature of the conference experience.

Bursary Program with the Manitoba Government

The Province of Manitoba’s Health Protection Unit is currently undergoing a recruitment drive to attract students to the field of Public Health Inspections. Manitoba Health Inspectors are an integral part of the public health team and enforce a variety of Public Health legislation. Public Health Inspectors work in the following areas:

Food safety
Drinking water safety
Recreational water safety
Care facilities
Food safety and sanitation requirements at special events and festivals
Communicable disease control
Emergency response team
Smoking and vaping in enclosed public settings
Air quality
Health promotion
Health hazard management

As part of Government’s strategic plan to address the vacancy and retention issue of our skilled workforce, they have created a Public Health Inspector Bursary program and offering it to Manitoba university students with a science background. Students who maybe interested in this career path and willing to go outside of the province to obtain their degree in Environmental Health, namely to Concordia University in Edmonton Alberta, are encouraged to apply here . The bursary covers the cost of the program and the cost of housing for the student while away. The student upon return to Manitoba will be guaranteed a full time position with Manitoba Health Seniors and Long-Term Care.

Herstart Fellowship Opportunities for Fall 2024 and Winter 2025!

Youth Challenge International’s (YCI) aims to provide 10,000 women and local partner organizations in Ghana, Tanzania and Uganda with access to social entrepreneurship training, resources and networks to successfully launch or grow their businesses. To achieve this, the HerStart program leverages the passion and skills of Canadian volunteers through the International Fellowship program.

HerStart International Fellows complete 3-month placements that meaningfully contribute to the goals of HerStart, while gaining hands-on professional international development experience, expanding their impact-driven networks, and collaborating with our impact-driven teams in Ghana, Tanzania, and Uganda!

Cohorts with start dates in January 2025 are now open for application! Apply by September 29^th for the January cohort (positions offered on a rolling basis – apply early!).
