Work Study Program
The Work Study Program assists you with meeting your expenses during the academic year. It offers you valuable life and work experience with flexible hours that fit around your school schedule. It can also provide work experience in your study area as many positions are program related.
Work Study positions run annually from November until March 31.

You are eligible for the Work Study Program if you meet all of the following criteria:
- Currently an undergraduate or graduate* student (PACE and ELP students are currently ineligible);
- Enrolled full-time for the current Fall/Winter session (i.e., at least 18 credit hours or 12 credit hours if registered with Accessibility Services);
- Completed 24 credit hours at an undergraduate level at the University (or equivalent);
- Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0;
- Have demonstrated financial need (shortage between your expenses and resources)**; and
- A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person or an international student with a valid study permit.
*Graduate students in a joint program may only be eligible if currently registered at UW or whose thesis advisor is a UW Faculty member.
**Zero on all resources fields is deemed an incomplete application. As a full-time student, you are expected to have some form of funding source.
You must apply first. Once assessments are done, we will notify you through your UW webmail account. Awards Office completes assessments once a week until the application closes.
Eligible students applying for Work Study positions must present their Work Study eligibility email notice with their job application.
IMPORTANT: Work Study student employees may hold only one position at any point during the work period.
Awards and Financial Aid office will send email notices to students eligible for Work Study Program once position listings are available (approximately mid-November). Updated position listings will be sent by webmail as well.

Hourly rates can differ with the nature of the job, your work history and the responsibilities of the job. The rate of pay will be indicated on the job posting. The minimum wage in the Province of Manitoba as of October 1, 2024 is $15.80 per hour, so all positions will be at this rate or higher.
There is no maximum number of hours for Work Study positions per week. However, being a student and keeping up with your studies is your primary job. International students can visit the ISS employment webpage for more information.
Important: Students may only hold one Work Study position at any given time during the work period.
You are expected to adhere to the Work Study policy.
- You may only hold one Work Study position at a time during the work current work period.
- You must inform your employer of any enrolment status change (i.e., you ceased to be a full-time student).
- You will keep your supervisor informed of your availability and do your duties as assigned.
- As a Work Study student, you are an important part of the University community. Not only are you a student, but you are also an employee! The supervisors that hire Work Study students rely on you to complete your assigned duties so that the services and research being done here is fulfilled.

Positions will be distributed as evenly as possible among departments, with priority given to proposals that are research-based or enhance the student experience. The Awards Office will notify employers of position decisions by late October.
