EDUC-5420-770 Intro to School Counselling

Delivery Method: LIVE: Scheduled class times will take place using an online platform. Students must be available during the posted lecture times for live streaming and/or group interactions. High speed internet is mandatory.

This course provides a comprehensive overview of the profession of school counselling. It provides students with an overview and general understanding of (1) historical perspectives and current activities of counsellors, (2) the role and function of counsellors in a variety of settings, (3) techniques utilized by counsellors, (4) multicultural considerations in counselling, (5) organization of counselling programs, and (6) legal and ethical guidelines.

This is a core course in the Counselling stream and counts as an elective in the General stream.


EDUC-5424-770 Group Counselling in Schools

Dates and Times: Wednesdays, September 3, 2024 to December 20, 2024; 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

This course examines the many facets of group dynamics, including characteristics, formation and dissolution, stages of change, and the role of the counsellor in facilitating collaboration, cooperation, and group processes. Strategies for facilitating productive and therapeutic guidance groups are investigated and the development of leadership skills in group counselling are conducted under supervision.

This is a core course in the Counselling stream and counts as an elective in the Special Ed (Inclusive Ed) and General streams.

 

EDUC-5426-770 School Counselling Practicum Skills

Dates and Times: Thursdays; September 3, 2024 to December 20, 2024; 5:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Location: LIVE: Scheduled class times will take place using an online platform. Students must be available during the posted lecture times for live streaming and/or group interactions. High speed internet is mandatory.

The practice skills course provides students with the opportunity to practice counselling skills and
techniques in a supervised lab setting. Students analyze case studies and use digital recordings to practice counselling, consulting and coordinating skills. Students are required to conduct 10 individual counselling sessions with a client. Students are expected to demonstrate a progression of skills that allow gradual progress into direct service with students in a school setting (under guidance of a site supervisor).

This is a core course in the School Counselling stream. Registration in this course requires permission from the Faculty of Education. *Pre-requisites: Completion of 18 core credit hours in the Counselling stream; and 6 credit hours of Counselling electives. Students who are not in the School Counselling stream can not enroll in EDUC-5426-050 Counselling Practicum Skills.

 

EDUC-5431-050 Mental Health Promotion in Schools

Teachers are often the first people who suspect mental illness in children. They work with children living with mental illness on a day-to-day basis. School-wide mental-health promotion requires an understanding of a whole-school-based response for nurturing mental health and resiliency for students and the school community. Issues related to physical and mental well-being, emotional literacy, and resilience are examined from a developmental perspective (early years, middle years, and senior years). This course promotes mental health, reduces the stigma associated with mental illness, and incorporates prevention and early intervention strategies in child and adolescent mental health.

This course counts as an elective in the School Counselling, Special Ed (Inclusive Ed), and General streams.

 

EDUC-5440-001 Inclusive Education I

This course presents as overview of educational theories, assessment procedures, delivery systems, and adaptive programming practices designed to serve students with special needs. Topics to be addressed include foundation definitions, history of inclusive education, neuro-developmental disorders, etiologies, learning disability, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, enrichment, individualized programming, and classroom strategies to promote student success. The intent is to make the learning of the principles of inclusion meaningful by relating them to their application.

This is a core course in the Special Education stream and also counts as an elective in the General stream.

This course offers an overview of exceptional children within the school setting. The intent is to focus on the extensive field of special education in Manitoba, to examine programming for students with special needs, and to consider the causes, characteristics, and implications of specific exceptionalities. School issues are examined through multiple lenses. Specifically, this course reviews recent scholarship and research into students with exceptionalities, drawn from the fields of psychology, sociology and education. Additionally, the course focuses on constantly changing demographics in the schools and the requirement for educators to reflect upon the meaning of global citizenship.

This is a core course in the Special Education stream and also counts as an elective in the General stream.
