Minor in Comparative Literature
Are you interested in literary works from various world regions? Would you like to compare creative expression in literature, theatre, film, and Indigenous practices? The Minor in Comparative Literature explores literary and other creative works, across cultures and media, in the original languages or in translation. With this versatile Minor, you can combine 18 credit hours in designated courses* of your choice.
EXAMPLES of COURSE CONTENT:
DISCOVER the rich varieties of English in the English department. Courses invite study of multiple forms, genres, and periods, from ancient classic texts in translation to contemporary cultural theory. In ENGL-2114: Fairy Tales, Fantasy & Culture, compare source material and adaptations on multiple fronts.
LEARN how literature both reflects and creates social, cultural and political realities. In EALC-2772: Modern Chinese Literature in Translation, examine how modern fiction, drama, and poetry awakened the political consciousness of the Chinese public, provoking reform, revolution, and dissent.
EXPLORE ideas and discourses that have shaped our world. In FREN-2385: Twentieth-Century French Writers and Thinkers, compare literary trends and works by writers from the 1950s to the present (Camus, Beauvoir, Le Clézio) to reflect on timely issues like identity, education, immigration, and ecology.

*The CL Minor is an Interdepartmental Arts Program requiring 9 credits from one department, and 9 credits from at least two other departments. Other courses not listed above may also be eligible for the Minor if content is appropriate for Comparative Literature.
