CHARACTER OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL

In positions at this level, incumbents work under the general direction of a more senior technician, administrator or academic staff member.  In performing the duties, incumbents utilize a wide variety of standardized technical procedures, analyses and/or equipment and provide technical and administrative assistance.  Incumbents may also be responsible for organizing specific work areas.  Duties are performed with independence, initiative and judgement.  Supervising students and the supervision and introductory training of other employees at the same or lower levels may be a requirement.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES WHICH ARE INTENDED TO ILLUSTRATE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL AND SHOULD NOT BE INTERPRETED AS A DESCRIPTION OF ANY ONE INDIVIDUAL POSITION WITHIN THIS CLASSIFICATION LEVEL

General Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Answers inquiries and/or provides technical assistance to students, staff and the public, referring more complex matters to a senior staff member when necessary
  2. Operates, demonstrates, monitors and maintains equipment, diagnosing and performing minor repairs (eg: laboratory equipment, graphic equipment, etc.)
  3. Orders and maintains inventories of supplies, materials and equipment, recording annual inventory and communicating with suppliers
  4. Monitors budget and expenditure records and provides input in the preparation of annual budgets
  5. Maintains records on staff actions, supplies, equipment, facilities, specimens, subjects, etc. manually or on computer and makes purchase recommendations
  6. Supervises students, assigns and monitors tasks and assists in the introductory training of other employees at the same or lower levels

    Other Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Prepares, sets up and demonstrates samples, objects, materials, supplies, equipment and models for laboratory classes and/or research and ensures these are readily available
  2. Maintains laboratories in an organized fashion, ensuring safety procedures are observed and consults with instructors regarding problems, revisions and improvements
  3. Monitors the environment in specific facilities to meet required storage practices - ie:  humidity, temperature, light, security, etc., adjusting as necessary and/or reporting malfunctions
  4. May plan field work activities including: making schedules, assigning resources and monitoring success
  5. Collects, downloads and interprets data from a number of sources, compiling reports as required
  6. May conduct and coordinate interviews and surveys for research purposes, maintaining records and data
  7. Enters and performs statistical analysis (both quantitative and qualitative analysis) on data and prepare results and reports
  8. Based on discussions with user(s), creates original designs and layouts of printed materials including brochures, posters, publications, signs, instructional artwork and charts and makes modifications to existing designs
  9. Prepares solutions and mixtures and performs technical procedures
  10. Orders, catalogues, files, stores, repairs and maintains collections including artifacts, maps, photographs, etc.
  11. Organizes and maintains books, journals, historical maps and travel information in a library and supervises material use and borrowing by users
  12. Performs other related duties as required or assigned
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

The minimum qualifications required are:

Level of Formal Education and Experience

  • Undergraduate degree in a related discipline plus one year of directly related experience or Diploma plus two years of directly related experience
  • or
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions on technical matters
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, students, and the public
  • Ability to use software applications required by an area for information processing
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others
  • Ability to direct or supervise the work of other employees at the same or lower levels in some positions
  • Some positions require a valid Manitoba Driver's Licence
