Churchill Cemetery

During the 2014 offering of the Department of Geography’s colloquially title “Churchill Field Course”, we under-took our first service-learning project based on a request from community leaders. This project was to produce a map and database of the Churchill Community Cemetery as none existed in a single location. This project, first proposed in 2012, did not get off the ground as bad weather and timing conspired to ensure it did not happen. However, the desire to map the cemetery never left.

When we brought this idea to the 2014 students who were planning on taking the course, they unanimously agreed that it should be done and that we would set aside an entire day to ensure its successful completion. Over the course of almost 4 hours, five teams of students mapped, photographed and cataloged each burial site within the cemetery. Over the proceeding months and years, the data was compiled with new interments being added. The result of their effort was a compilation of maps and photographs of the cemetery and graves which are now available for download.
