The first St. Patrick鈥檚 Day Fight

MARCH 17, 1921: Some freshmen overheard a group of seniors, back from shopping, discussing their new spats: they took offense and perceived it as boasting.  Fisticuffs ensued, and the freshmen apprehended the spats as trophies. In later years the competition revolved around a piece of green cloth tied to the branches of the elm tree which now towers over the field out front of Wesley. It was a years-based competition (i.e. freshmen, juniors, seniors, & sophomores were all teams). This tradition continued until 1932 when the administration successfully discouraged it.
