Rock of Remembrance laid
OCTOBER 9, 1971:In a ceremony that was part of the University’s 100th anniversary celebrations, a 25-ton granite boulder formed from Lake Agassiz was laid and dedicated by President Duckworth on the front lawn. That year the Great Tricycle Race began, pitting teams of staff, students, or faculty against each other on a tricycle race around campus; and the following year the Great Rock Climb, in which teams of 3 compete for the fastest time to sprint from the steps of Wesley Hall to the top of the rock. A record of 9.8 seconds, set in 1979, remains unbroken.
